Depression, is it in your blood?

(This is part 2 guest blog series by my nutrition intern Kyria Edwards.  Enjoy!)

In case you missed it, my last blog post on the root causes of depression  taught you that depression is often just a symptom of various other underlying issues (NOT low serotonin!). These root causes range from nutritional deficiencies, toxic exposure, and other underlying health issues like blood sugar and thyroid imbalances.

But how can you figure out WHICH potential cause of depression is affecting you?

For the rest of the series, don’t forget to check out:

Depression is a daily struggle for those who are diagnosed, and one that affects the economic, social, and mental health of our nation. The DSM-V lists a wide range of criteria for depressive episodes that includes:

  • depressed mood or irritability
  • decreased interest or pleasure
  • significant weight change (5%) or change in appetite
  • change in sleep
  • change in activity
  • fatigue or loss of energy
  • guilt/worthlessness
  • diminished ability to concentrate
  • and suicidality among additional markers

From these aforementioned symptoms alone, it is clear that depression is a powerful threat to one’s own well-being.  When we consider that one in ten Americans are currently struggling with this condition, it is also a national threat to the well-being of our country. It is absolutely imperative that a holistic solution be offered to support those struggling with depression so that they may return to a life well lived.

Holistic vs Conventional Approach: What’s The Difference?

In the conventional approach to depression, a doctor diagnoses depression by asking specific questions, doing a psychiatric evaluation, using the criteria noted above in the DMS-5,  or by doing a physical exam. They can also do lab tests and blood work to assess if there are other underlying diseases. The treatment is then typically medication or psychotherapy.

In the holistic approach, functional blood chemistry analysis (FBCA) can help clients pin point the root cause of their mental health issues. FBCA is an alternative approach to the conventional method of interpreting blood test results. Imagine taking your car into the mechanic and getting a diagnostic of what is going on under the hood. It is like that, only for your body. You get the inside scoop on what is happening to your health, on a cellular level.

Holistic = Optimal Health

FBCA is single handedly one of the most powerful tools for helping you with your health because it is 100% based off of your own individual blood work, making it easier to take direct action in the ways that your body needs it the most. One of the current issues in the medical model today is that antidepressants are served as the catch-all for anyone suffering from depression. In addition, the depressive symptoms are almost always a result of a deeper undiagnosed psychiatric or physical issue that could be highlighted through the blood work. In other words, for many people the depressive symptoms themselves are not the only health problem, but they are usually a symptom of a deeper underlying issue.

Conventional = Diagnose Disease

The conventional medical model uses blood tests, too, but they use diagnostic lab ranges with the intention of diagnosing their patients. On the other hand, the functional model looks to prevent disease and promote optimum health by using functional lab ranges. The main focus is that functional nutrition is less concerned with simply treating symptoms and more concerned with assessing the underlying cause and mechanism of those symptoms. Through use of FBCA, individuals can best be supported to attain their optimum health by gaining clear insight of the physiology of their body.

Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis: The Solution to Discovering Your Root Cause

There are numerous markers that can be assessed to identify where the issue may be coming from systemically in the body, and even what prescriptions may not be effective, simply by running a blood test. For example, studies have shown that high levels of inflammation found in blood tests correlate with lower success rates in treatment.  When considering that more than half of all clients will not respond to first-line antidepressants, such as Prozac and Zoloft, it is evident that a new approach is needed. FBCA is an effective tool for those combating depression because they will be supported with the health education necessary to make the dietary and lifestyle adjustments needed to support their healing process.

Depression_ Is It In Your Blood?

What’s In My Blood?

You probably know that your blood is the red liquid that flows from your head to your toes, carrying oxygen to and carbon dioxide from the tissues of your body. But did you know that it can also be an essential tool in checking your current health status? Your blood test is a detailed snapshot of your current state of health. The comprehensive blood test that I recommend to all clients provides information on over 200 biomarkers, including:

  • a cholesterol screen
  • fasting glucose
  • iron studies
  • mineral markers
  • immune system markers
  • thyroid panel
  • full liver screen
  • kidney screen
  • complete blood count
  • and more

The following are among the most essential to screen in a blood test when looking for root causes of depression:

Aren’t conventional blood tests and FBCA tests the same?

Just as important as the blood test is the health practitioner that you are working with to interpret the results. As noted above, both a conventional doctor and a holistic practitioner may look at the same exact blood work and have a different reading based on the lens of optimal health vs diagnosis. Whether you are looking to understand your health problems from a deeper level or you simply want to check your progress on your current health regimen, FBCA is a powerful tool that can give you the behind-the-scenes-peek at your own physiological well being.

FBCA practitioners use optimal ranges for lab result assessment instead of conventional disease-finding ranges.  If your conventional lab results come back with a stamp of “everything looks great” from your doctor while you are still feeling terrible, FBCA optimal ranges can give you a deeper look into what might be going on.

How Can Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis Help Me?

FBCA is a key tool in the functional nutrition model. Conventional medicine typically looks at the symptoms a patient is experiencing, connects these to a diagnosis of a disease, and treats the disease through treatment plan often including the use of pharmaceuticals. Functional nutrition, however, is keenly focused on identifying the root cause of the issue, preventing disease, and helping to promote optimum health and well-being. FBCA is an essential tool to any warrior on the health quest because it supports the holistic drive toward optimum health, not merely the absence of depressive symptoms.

Stay tuned for the third blog post in this 4-part series coming up next week! It will be all about connecting the power of this functional blood chemistry analysis with the root causes of depression so that you can take a closer look at your own blood work with optimal lab value ranges. At the end of this series, we are going to have a free hour-long webinar covering depression live on February 27th and 28th. Save the date!

Five Root Causes of Depression that you can Address Today

(This blog series is guest written by my holistic nutrition intern Kyria Edwards! Enjoy!)

Do you know someone who has struggled with depression?

Have you suffered from depression?

Are you currently dealing with depressive symptoms?

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Depression affects us all.

It is critical to be familiar with the root causes of depression so that you may help yourself and support your loved ones through hard times.

Spoiler alert: it’s not serotonin!

For the rest of the series, don’t forget to check out:

Depression is on the rise

Depression is a serious condition that challenges many individuals. Depression affects 13.2% of Americans at some point in their lifetime.

According to a study that followed the use of mental health services in America for a year, most people suffering from depression are untreated or receive ineffective treatment to heal their depressive symptoms.

Therefore, it is critical to identify the root causes of depression to gain the skills necessary for both preventing and addressing depressive symptoms.

You have the power to help

Fortunately, you have the power to exercise mindfully, reduce sugar consumption, and eat healthy fats to work towards depression-prevention as well as the healing of depressive symptoms.

In addition, you can take steps today to address these five root causes of depression.

Screen Shot 2018-01-19 at 8.29.09 AM

Five Root Causes of Depression:

1. Birth control

According to a study published by the CDC, 62% of women of reproductive age use contraception. Of those women, twenty-eight percent (10.6 million) are using the pill. The birth control pill is commonly reported to cause depression along with a host of other negative side effects. This is so common that 30% of women who take the pill eventually quit due to dissatisfaction from harmful side effects. Furthermore, women who were prescribed the combined pill have been shown to be as much as 23% more likely to be treated with antidepressants.

2. Gut-brain inflammation

If there’s one thing to remember about the root of depression, it is inflammation. The gut and brain are intimately linked and affect each other. Evidence shows that depression is triggered by the inflammatory response system. Gut inflammation has a significant impact on brain health, and healing it could help reverse depressive symptoms. This inflammation could start from sugar, pathogens, chemicals, grains or inflammatory foods, or physical or mental stress. Unfortunately, once inflammation starts it is like a forest fire and keeps burning until you actively address it.

  • How to address it? You can help heal inflammation with exercise, specific supplementation, meditation, and diet (see below).

3. Food

Every time you pick up your fork, you have the power to support your best mental health. Extra bonus: if you are eating for health, you have the freedom to stop counting calories and weighing yourself as you focus on nourishing meals that leave you feeling refreshed. Keep these potential inflammatory depression-linked categories in mind the next time you are at the grocery store or farmer’s market:

Gluten

Gluten is one of the most inflammatory foods in the market. This inflammation leads to gut permeability, which has been shown to promote depressive symptoms. Even if you don’t have celiac disease, studies have shown gluten has an adverse effect on nearly everyone. Learn tips on how to decrease gluten and other inflammatory grains here.

Dairy

The protein found in conventional dairy products, known as casein, has been shown to promote inflammation. This has a similar effect as gliadin, the protein found in gluten, because it also leads to gut permeability and decreased brain functioning.

Sugar

Two hundred years ago the average American ate two pounds of sugar per year. Today, the average American eats 152 pounds of sugar per year. This is 76 times the amount of our ancestors!

Sugar has a distinct link to depression that is similar to dairy and gluten. Yup, you guessed it! Inflammation. Just like gluten and dairy, sugar has addictive qualities that make it a challenging food group to quit, but it is possible to get over a sugar addiction with the right tools in place.

Vegetable Oils

These are predominantly made from GMOs, and they consist of: safflower oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, and canola oil. Chemical solvents are used to create them, which makes it virtually impossible for our bodies to process these unrecognizable compounds. This leads to inflammation, which promotes depressive symptoms. You can read about which fats that are safe to consume here.

GMOs

GMO foods are often planted so farmers can use the assistance of herbicide chemicals as they farm. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup,  is the world’s most widely used herbicide. Virtually everyone is consuming glyphosate on a daily basis, unless they are eating strictly organic. This pesticide has numerous dangerous effects, like causing cancer or leading to chronic diseases (like depression).

B12 deficiency

While we are on the topic of food, let’s discuss one of the most important vitamins. There are a total of eight B vitamins. However, vitamin B12 is an important ally when combating depression. Studies have shown that a simple deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to depression and anxiety. This is because vitamin B12 is essential for healthy brain functioning through its role in red blood cell production, methylation, and homocysteine recycling. B12 deficiencies can occur from low stomach acid, consumption of GMO foods, certain medications, autoimmune diseases, and dietary restrictions.

  • How to address it? Avoid/reduce intake of gluten, conventional dairy, sugar, vegetable oils, GMO foods, and eat plenty of vitamin B12 foods.

Screen Shot 2018-01-19 at 8.29.40 AM

4. Environment

The environment can promote depression through a number of ways. Death, divorce, job loss, and relationship conflicts can lead to a challenging socioeconomic environment. Furthermore, one’s physical environment can be contaminated with chemicals and toxins from air, water, and food pollution. It is key to identify the sources of toxins in your habits and home so that you are empowered with the knowledge to make a change. Check out the Environmental Working Group to find products for your home and body that are chemical free.

  • How to address it? Be mindful of environmental causes of depression in social, emotional, occupational, and physical manifestations. Even simple choices like having an air and water filter in your home can bring great benefit.

5. Underlying Diseases

Depression is a common symptom in many diseases, showing up as a sign of a deeper healthy issue. The challenge is that many doctors see depression as an isolated event, then use prescriptions to mask the depression while not assessing if there are deeper health problems. The two most prominent disorders related to depression are blood sugar issues and undiagnosed thyroid disorder.

Blood sugar imbalance

Improperly managed diabetes can result in symptoms that appear to be depression, and those who have diabetes are at a greater risk for having depression as well. Learn how to balance your blood sugar here.

Hypothyroid

One of the top symptoms of a dysfunctioning thyroid is depression. Almost 10 million Americans suffer from hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces too few hormones.  Furthermore, a study published that patients with subclinical hypothyroid were 56% more likely to be depressed at some point in their lifetime in comparison to those who did not have thyroid disorders. Note that “subclinical” means that most doctors who run blood tests, assuming they are testing thyroid markers in the first place, would likely miss these patients because their lab results are outside the scope of conventional diagnostic lab ranges.  (A follow up blog in this series will discuss this issue in detail).

Lastly, hypothyroidism and depression share the following symptoms: weight gain, decreased libido, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and depressed mood. Unless you and your health practitioner are actively testing for thyroid health, it is likely this could be the root cause of depression.

  • How to address it? Get your blood tested for blood disorders (such as diabetes) and thyroid disease (such as hypothyroidism) through a functional blood chemistry practitioner to ensure your results will be assessed even if “subclinical.” (Details on how to do this will be in a future blog in this series).

Taking action

It can be both a challenge and a delight to make and break habits. Keep these root causes in mind as you work with your health care practitioner. By being aware of these root causes, you are better enabled to take action toward living the life you desire.
